Ruth Blanke x Zoffany

Avalonis  is a 140cm wide screen printed wallpaper created for Zoffany at Sanderson design group.  Composed like an old map, Avalonis is a mythical landscape of small interlinking islands, threaded together like inviable chapters. They characterise the connection between humans and animals, charting our symbiotic, existentialist existence, reflecting opposing sides of the eco-system. Water is central to the mural’s theme. It represents the flow of eternal life, navigating and negotiating, limited only by the challenges we face.

This was my opportunity to fully utilised Zoffany’s expertise, pushing the boundaries of what I could achieve with the screen printing process and produce something on a scale that I didn't have the facilities to do in my own studio. The real drive behind this design is my love of hand printing techniques. I have a real admiration for block print and wanted to see if I could achieve this aesthetic through screen printing.
